Kyiv discusses installation of memorial plaque to Gareth Jones

10 April 2025

A Welsh Senedd delegation travelled to Kyiv to honour Welsh journalist Gareth Jones, who was known for his work exposing the 1933-1934 Holodomor famine. The British Embassy in Ukraine reported this.

Parliamentarians met with representatives of the Kyiv City Council to discuss placing a memorial plaque on Gareth Jones Street in the capital.

“The plaque, which is yet to be designed by local craftsmen using slate, a traditional Welsh material, will commemorate Jones’ reporting that revealed the truth about Stalin’s policies despite significant personal risk,” the British Embassy says.

As a reminder, Gareth Jones Street appeared in Kyiv two years ago, in March 2023. The city renamed the former Khokhlov Family Street to honour the journalist.
