Roman Moldavsky gave an online lecture for listeners from Peru and Latin America
Continuing the long-standing cooperation of the National Museum of the Holodomor-Genocide with numerous organisations of Ukrainians abroad, a researcher at the Department of Holodomor Oral History, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Roman Moldavsky, gave a lecture on the topic “Holodomor-Genocide: The Struggle for Memory” for listeners from Peru. The event was organised by the head of the Peruvian-Ukrainian Association, Ms Yuliia Dymar, and Professor Ms Julia Villena. This year, representatives of other Ukrainian societies from Latin American countries also joined the event.
During the story, the reasons for the silence of the terrible crime of the Soviet regime were highlighted, the history of the existence of oral testimonies about the Holodomor during the existence of the USSR, the history of collecting and preserving the testimonies of people who survived the Holodomor, and the work of the Museum in the context of collecting, processing and preserving testimonies was also highlighted.
The discussion of the report and questions by the participants of the event at the same time demonstrated the sincere interest of those present in the mentioned issues. The issue of the genocidal nature of this terrible crime of the communist regime and the question of the lessons that the Ukrainian people should learn from this tragedy, especially in the context of current Russian aggression and current genocide, was raised.
On Holodomor Remembrance Day, November 23, the Ukrainian community in Peru participated in mourning events held worldwide. Representatives of the Ukrainian community honoured the memory of the Holodomor victims with a joint prayer at Saint Leopold’s Church, followed by a screening of a documentary film about the Holodomor.
We thank the Ukrainians in Peru for their concern, desire to know their history, and constant support for Ukraine.
