The grandson of amateur photographer Marko Zalizniak, Volodymyr Havshchuk, visited the Holodomor Victims Memorial.
Marko Zalizniak was an amateur photographer from the Romanivka hamlet in Donetsk region. He left a true photographic record of the destruction of the Ukrainian village of Udachne in the late 1920s–early 1930s. In his images, there is footage of collectivization, dekulakization and dispossession of farmers, confiscation of bread and eviction to Siberia.
Volodymyr Havshchuk remembers his grandfather’s stories about the photographs taken during the Holodomor. Mr. Havshchuk conducted local lore research on the history of his native Donetsk region, wondering how the fate of the people photographed by Mark Zalizniak’s camera went. Based on the stories of old-timers from Donetsk region, Volodymyr Havshchuk reconstructed the story of most of the photographs taken by Marko Zalizniak.
