Abstract:
This article examines the role of the Ukrainian community in the United States in discussions around the topic of genocide and the UN Genocide Convention during the late 1940s and early 1950s. Based on US Congressional publications and articles in American and diaspora periodicals, the authors study the attempts of Ukrainian Americans to raise awareness about the Holodomor and hold the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) accountable for its crimes against the Ukrainian nation. Special attention is given to the cooperation between Raphael Lemkin, a prominent international lawyer who coined the term ‘genocide’, and Lev E. Dobriansky, the president of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA), on the issue of advocacy for the ratification of the UN Genocide Convention.
