A performance SИN will take place on Remembrance Day

14 November 2024

On November 23, with the support of the National Museum of the Holodomor-Genocide, there will be a showing of the play SИN.

The performance premiere based on the short story “Son” by Valerian Pidmohylnyi, one of the most outstanding writers of the Ukrainian “Shot Revival,” took place on November 10, 2021.

With the onset of the war, the play became even more relevant. Therefore, during 2022-2023, it was adapted for the Hall of Memory at the National Museum of the Holodomor Genocide. Now, SИN is returning to the renewed stage of one of the oldest cultural centres of Kyiv – Pechersk Palace, so that everyone can honour the memory of the victims of the Holodomor on Remembrance Day on 23.11.2024.

The leitmotif of the performance is Ukrainian folk songs in a live choral performance by the honoured folk song and dance ensemble of Ukraine “DARNYCHANKA,” accompanied by bandurist Anzhela Nykoruk. The artistic director of the ensemble is the head of the National All-Ukrainian Music Union, Honored Worker of Culture of Ukraine – Petro Andriychuk.

The directors of the play are Yehor Vodiakhin and Kristina Sheludko.

A performance SИN is about the everyday life of Ukrainians during the mass man-made famine. The first mass man-made famine organized by Bolshevik Russia occurred in the 1920s.

The main character of the story, Hrytsko Vasiurenko – SИN – becomes a hostage not only of a cruel system but also of his own principles and beliefs. He sees how his fellow villagers have to give away their bread, land and livestock. He sees the hopelessness of the people who get used to hunger and treat it as their everyday life. Will the SON be able to find the strength to take care of his exhausted mother and remain human in inhumane conditions?
