Audio versions of two more sources from the Holodomor history are available on the Museum’s website

The educational team of the Holodomor Museum presented two texts that are extremely important in the context of studying the history of the Holodomor.

First of all, this is Raphael Lemkin’s article “Soviet Genocide in Ukraine”. In it, the author of the term “genocide” and the initiator of the adoption of the UN Convention “On the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide” (1948) called the Holodomor a classic example of genocide. The article was written in 1953 for a speech at the commemoration of the Great Famine by the Ukrainian community of New York.

The second text is the conclusions of the Commission of the US Congress on the Holodomor in Ukraine (1988). This document became a significant milestone on the way to recognising the Holodomor as genocide.

It was the activity of the Commission that forced the leaders of the USSR in 1987 to recognise the fact of famine of 1932-1933, and finally, Ukrainian historians began researching the Holodomor. The US Senate and House of Representatives relied on the conclusions of the Commission when they recognised the Holodomor as genocide in 2018.
