We invite you to Ivan Petrenko’s lecture

29 September 2023

On Saturday, September 30, a lecture will be held as part of our joint Museum Talk project with Odesa National Art Museum.

The topic of our conversation is “How food became a weapon: the mass man-made famine of 1921-1923 in Odesa.” Ivan Petrenko, deputy head of the Genocide, Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Research Department, will speak.

This famine had not been written about in Soviet textbooks for a long time. Some call it a “rehearsal” for the Holodomor of 1932-1933 — while the NEP was unfolding in the cities, Ukrainian villages were starving from Bolshevik terror and drought. Southern regions, including Odesa, were the hardest hit.

So, on Saturday, we will talk about how:

• Soviet Russia occupied the territory of the Ukrainian People’s Republic;

• mass man-made famine occurred in Soviet Ukraine 1921-1923;

• this tragedy continued precisely in Odesa province.
