Slovo House game

Come and join us for the game ‘The “Slovo” House’!

What secrets did the walls of Ukraine’s most famous literary house conceal? You can find out the answer on 15 August during an interactive game dedicated to the history of the ‘Slovo’ House.

At the turn of the 1920s and 1930s, this house became a home to dozens of Ukrainian writers, poets, theatre directors and other cultural figures. Mykola Khvyliovyi, Mike Johansen, Pavlo Tychyna, Volodymyr Sosiura, Ostap Vyshnia, Oles Kurbas, Nataliia Uzhviy, Ivan Bahrianyi and many other representatives of the Ukrainian intelligentsia worked there. For some, this place became a symbol of creative fulfilment; for others, the beginning of a tragic fate.

As you play, you’ll explore the flats of the building’s residents, discover historical photographs, autographs and other materials, and uncover little-known aspects of the artists’ lives. Step by step, the Kharkiv of the 1930s will unfold before you: a city where inspiration coexisted with censorship, repression and the constant threat of persecution.

This is an opportunity not only to learn more about the legendary ‘Slovo’ House and its residents, but also to gain a better understanding of the conditions under which Ukrainian culture flourished, and why freedom of speech is so highly valued.

The game was developed by the Kharkiv Literary Museum. The creators are Maryna Kutsenko and Olha Cheremska.

Date and Time: Sunday 15 August at 4.00 pm.
Venue: The Holodomor Museum, 15-A Ivana Mazepy Street.

Participation in the game is free; you only pay for the museum admission ticket (20–30 UAH).

Registration is compulsory. You can register here.
