Every year, traditionally, on the fourth Saturday of November at 4 p.m., Ukrainians around the world light candles on the windowsills of their homes and in the central squares of cities to honour the memory of millions of Ukrainians who died during the Holodomor -genocide of 1932–1933 and the mass man-made famines of 1921–1923 and 1946–1947. This year, the Day of Remembrance for the Holodomor Victims is observed on the 22nd of November.
To remind people of the Ukrainian tradition of unity in memory of those innocently killed by famine, the Holodomor Museum, in cooperation with the Kyiv Metro, provided posters with the slogan “Wherever you are, light a candle of memory” for display on metro trains.
“Wherever you are, light a candle of memory” is a call to everyone to join in commemorating the victims of the Holodomor genocide. Some are defending their homeland and are in dugouts or trenches, while others are holding the home front. However, we are all united these days by our shared memory of the Holodomor. Join us! May the lights of memory on this day serve as a reminder that we are alive and that we have not forgotten or forgiven anything.
