1988 year. In Ukraine, they are just starting to talk timidly about the famine of 1932-1933, and two young artists from Kyiv start work on a large-scale canvas about the Holodomor. They will finish it in a year and call it “Genocide 1933”. It will be a challenge and a shock. And this will be the first painting on this topic in post-Soviet Ukraine.

What prompted the artists to do this? How did the audience and authorities perceive the picture? What family secrets do the Honcharenko brothers tell? What technical difficulties appeared during the creation of the triptych? And what is the purpose of St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery?
