In the Luhansk region, the occupiers destroyed crosses on the graves of Holodomor victims
In the temporarily occupied territories, Russian forces continue their cynical destruction of Ukrainian history and national memory. It became known about three more facts of the destruction of crosses on the graves of Holodomor victims by the occupiers in the territory of the Luhansk region. This time, the accidents occurred in the Novopskov area, particularly in Zaaidaryvka, Rohove, and Aidar. The crosses, installed as evidence of the tragedy of the Ukrainian people, have now been cut down, the Luhansk OVA reported.
The destruction of monuments commemorating the victims of the crimes of the communist regime has become a routine practice in the occupied territories. Last year in July, the occupiers in Luhansk destroyed memorials to the victims of the Holodomor and Stalinist repressions. Earlier still, Russian invaders demolished similar memorial sites in Mariupol and the Kherson region.
Such actions are more than mere vandalism; they represent a deliberate policy of the Kremlin regime. Denial of the Holodomor and deliberate distortion of this period in history are key tools in the information war that Russia is waging against Ukraine.
According to the National Book of Remembrance of the Holodomor Victims (Luhansk region volume), at least 460 people perished in Zaaidaryvka, Rohove, and Aidar during the Holodomor (these are only the victims identified by name). Entire families died. Children and young, able-bodied people perished. While it is genocide and a terrible tragedy for us, for the occupiers, it is merely “inconvenient moments” of history. Whether Soviet or Russian, an occupier remains an occupier, devoid of remorse and compassion.
However, the Russians must understand this: one may seize territory and destroy monuments, but one cannot erase the memory or obliterate the truth.
The occupiers’ actions outraged us, and we demand justice for those responsible for these acts of desecration of the memory of the millions who perished in the Holodomor.
