Public dialogue ‘Russian Imperialism and Its Genocides: History and Present’

16 June 2025

On 26 June, the Holodomor Museum will host a public dialogue titled, “Russian Imperialism and its Genocides: History and Present”. The event is dedicated to the 125th anniversary of Raphael Lemkin’s birth, the author of the term “genocide”.

In the context of Russia’s current aggressive war against Ukraine, when the Russian government and its army, in addition to war crimes and crimes against humanity, are committing genocidal extermination of Ukrainians, there is an urgent need for a thorough professional understanding of the genesis and peculiarities of the historical evolution of Russia’s (imperial, Soviet and modern) genocidal policy towards different peoples to achieve its imperialist goals.

Ukrainians, Crimean Tatars, Circassians, Chechens and other peoples of the Caucasus, Nogays, Kazakhs – for centuries, Russia has committed genocides against various nations to subdue them or seize their territories. During the public dialogue, our speakers will analyse the genocidal component of the Russian state’s imperialist policy, starting with the Moscow principality and ending with the current genocidal war against Ukraine. We will also discuss the possible negative consequences of this aggression for our nation and country. We will also focus on the figure of Raphael Lemkin and his vision of Soviet genocidal policy.

Our speakers:

Stanislav Fedorchuk is a political scientist, publicist, head of the Post-Soviet Studies Department at the Ukrainian Strategic Initiative think tank at NaUKMA;
