22 November is Remembrance Day for the Holodomor Victims. The work of the museum
In 1932–1933, the communist totalitarian regime perpetrated genocide against the Ukrainian people. Millions of Ukrainians were killed by starvation through the forced confiscation of food, the blockade of villages, travel bans and repression against those who resisted.
Nowadays, with the new Russian-Ukrainian war going on, we totally realise what a policy of destruction is: Russia is again committing war crimes and genocide against Ukrainians. Remembering the Holodomor is a part of our resilience and motivation to fight and win.
On 22 November at 4:00 pm, Ukraine will honour the memory of the Holodomor victims with a nationwide minute of silence.
We call on you to:
Visit the National Museum of the Holodomor Genocide in Kyiv (the museum will operate free of charge from 1:00 pm);
Visit places of remembrance for the Holodomor victims in your hometown throughout the day;
At 4 pm, pause for a minute of silence to honour all those starved to death and to light a candle of memory on your windowsill, at home or at work, wherever you may be.
A candle in the window is a sign that we are alive and remember the dead; it is our silent protest against genocide and our faith in Ukraine’s future.
Wherever you are on 22 November at 4 pm, light a candle of memory. We urge you to remember those killed by famine and to support those who are defending our freedom today.
