An exhibition entitled “The Uncondemned Genocide of Ukrainians Repeats” opened in Botswana

25 November 2025

The Holodomor Museum exhibition “The Uncondemned Genocide of Ukrainians Repeats” was opened at the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Botswana on the occasion of the Day of Remembrance for the Holodomor Victims. Representatives of the diplomatic corps, the Ukrainian community, partners and friends of the Ukrainian Embassy joined the memorial event on 22 November.

Oleksiy Syvak, Ukraine’s ambassador to the Republic of Botswana, told those present about the Holodomor of 1932–1933 in Ukraine, a man-made famine deliberately organised by the Soviet regime against Ukraine. Millions of people in Ukraine fell victim to it. He shared information about the tradition of remembrance: every year on the fourth Saturday of November, Ukrainians light candles on their windowsills in memory of the Holodomor victims. He invited those present to join this campaign.

He emphasised that the Holodomor remains a reminder that food can be a weapon. Russia continues to use this practice today, attacking Ukraine’s agricultural infrastructure and obstructing grain exports, which affects global food security.

Participants in the event commemorated the victims of genocide in Ukraine in a joint prayer led by Cyril Hovorun.

We sincerely thank the Ukrainian Embassy and the head of the Ukrainian Centre in Gabarone, Estephe Camus, who communicated with the museum, for preserving the memory and disseminating the truth about the Holodomor.
