19 November 2025

On 22 November, Holodomor Remembrance Day, the Pechersk Palace Cultural Centre will host a performance by the ПОГLЯD Theatre Workshop, “SИN,” based on the story ‘Son’ by Valerian Pidmohylnyi, one of the most prominent writers of the Executed Renaissance.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT

Not everyone knows that the Holodomor of 1932-1933 was not the first famine on Ukrainian soil. The first mass man-made famine, organised by Bolshevik Russia, occurred in the 1920s, affecting the southern provinces of the Ukrainian SSR. Due to crop failures in the Kuban and Volga regions caused by drought, Ukrainian grain was confiscated and transported to Russia. As a result, millions of Ukrainians suffered from famine between 1921 and 1923. Any information about the famine in Ukraine was suppressed. The Ukrainian and Russian press were subject to party censorship.
Valerian Pidmohylnyi was one of the first writers who dared to write about the famine of 1921-1923. In his story ‘’Son,” the writer described how the terrible ordeal of famine affects the human consciousness.

The play “SИN” is about the life and everyday existence of Ukrainians during the mass man-made famine of 1922-1923.

The main character, Hrytsko Vasiurenko, known as SON, becomes a hostage not only to a cruel system but also to his own principles and beliefs. Will SON be able to find the strength to care for his exhausted mother while maintaining his humanity in inhumane conditions?

THE BACKGROUND OF THE PRODUCTION

The play premiere took place on 10 December 2021.

With the outbreak of full-scale war, the production became even more relevant; therefore, during 2022-2023, it was adapted for the Hall of Memory of the National Museum of the Holodomor Genocide.

For the fifth year in a row, this production is a joint project of the ПОГLЯD Theatre Workshop and the National Museum of the Holodomor Genocide.

Now, the play “SИN” is returning to the renovated stage of one of Kyiv’s oldest cultural centres, the Pechersk Palace, to join the audience in honouring the memory of the Holodomor victims on Remembrance Day, which this year falls on 22 November.

Over 70 artists are involved in the performance.

The play’s leitmotif features Ukrainian folk songs sung live by over 40 voices of the Honoured Folk Choir of Ukraine “Darnychanka”.
