The documentary “Family Album”, filmed in partnership with the Holodomor Museum, will represent Ukraine at the Warsaw Film Festival

17 September 2024

The world premiere of the documentary film “Family Album”, directed by Maryna Tkachuk in partnership with the Holodomor Museum, will take place at the anniversary Warsaw International Film Festival on October 13, 2024. The film will participate in the competition program of the “A” class festival in the documentaries section.

The plot focuses on the historical parallels between Russia’s genocidal practices during the Holodomor of 1932-1933 and the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Director Maryna Tkachuk says: “The film is based on the incredible story of the British photographer Samara Pearce and her great-grandfather, the Austrian engineer Alexander Wienerberger, who became an accidental Holodomor witness in Kharkiv in 1933 and miraculously took the most important photographs of the man-made famine in Ukraine. After learning about the history of her great-grandfather, Samara rethought her creative career and focused exactly on Ukraine and its struggle for independence. 90 years after the events of the Holodomor, a British photographer accompanied by our film crew went to the Kharkiv region, where her great-grandfather used to live, to take her own photos of the war. And this is to testify that the genocide of Ukrainians continues.”

“Family Album” is one of the winners of the Art Competition of the State Enterprise Multimedia foreign broadcasting platform of Ukraine for producing series and films on modern topics, held in 2023. The film was created in cooperation with the National Museum of the Holodomor-Genocide and the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation. Also, with the support of UCF, the film has already been translated and voiced into five languages: English, Polish, German, French and Spanish. The film was produced by the Good Morning Films company, producer – Andrii Korniienko. The Holodomor Museum provided academic and consulting assistance to the film crew, and some film scenes were also filmed there.

On November 21, the Holodomor Remembrance Day, the Ukrainian premiere of the “Family Album,” will take place at the Ukrainian House in Kyiv. We are happy to be involved in such a crucial film and are looking forward to the premiere!
