Anti-Soviet partisans’ memorial in Wroclaw won the CODAawards 2024 competition
Anti-Soviet partisans’ memorial in Wrocław won the CODAawards 2024 international competition for the best work of art in public space. The Monument to the Unbroken Warriors was well-received by viewers from around the world and jurors of the competition. As a result, it won two main awards: first place in the “Public Spaces” category (awarded by an international jury) and the audience choice award. The Platform of European Memory and Conscience reported it.
The memorial to Polish partisans who fought against the Soviet Union after 1945 was opened on May 8 this year. It reminds us of the sacrifice made by the post-war generation of Poles, who refused to accept the order brought to Poland by Soviet bayonets. The monument has the appearance of nine glass cubes in which figures of soldiers are mounted. The jury noted that the work departs from the traditional image of the heroic soldier from the monuments of the past, evoking instead a “deep, eerie sadness and fear of the horrors of war.” The authors of the project are Wroclaw artists Tomasz and Konrad Urbanowicz.
As the Platform of European Memory and Conscience emphasises, the award for the memorial proves that the topic of crimes of totalitarian regimes is still “very important on a global scale.”
We will remind you that the Platform is an international project designed to investigate the activities and crimes of totalitarian regimes in Europe in the 20th century and to prevent the restoration of totalitarianism in Europe. The Holodomor Museum has been a member of the Platform since 2015.
