Monument to Holodomor victims unveiled in the capital of North Macedonia
On 21 May, a monument to the Holodomor victims, The Bitter Memory of Childhood, was unveiled in Skopje. The sculpture was installed in the capital’s administrative unit, Opština Čair, in the park “Ukraine”. It is an exact copy of our “girl with ears of grain” that stands on the territory of the Museum.
The Embassy of Ukraine in North Macedonia reports that Larysa Dir, the Ambassador of Ukraine, and Visar Ganiu, the city mayor, attended the event.
“This artwork, a tribute to the children who were victims of the Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine, powerfully reminds us of the tragic consequences of wars and injustice. Thanks to this sculpture, Park “Ukraine” acquires a new aspect: reflection, memory, and collective consciousness. With this symbolic act, we reaffirmed our commitment to always be on the side of human values,” stated Mr Visar Ganiu.
Ambassador of Ukraine Larysa Dir expressed her sincere gratitude to the mayor and his team for implementing this significant project.
Thank you, North Macedonia, and thank you, Skopje!
As a reminder, the Bitter Memory of Childhood monument, created in 2008 by artists Petro Drozdovsky and Mykola Obeziuk, is the hallmark of our museum and the most recognisable sculpture of the Holodomor victims. Similar monuments have been erected in several Canadian cities.
