Schools in the Canadian province of Ontario will teach about the Holodomor starting in September

9 March 2026

The Consul General of Ukraine in Toronto, Oleh Nikolenko, held an official meeting with Paul Calandra, Minister of Education of the Province of Ontario. One of the topics discussed at the meeting was the inclusion of the Holodomor in the school curriculum. As the Consul General reported on his Facebook page, starting in September 2026, 10th-grade students in the province of Ontario will be required to study the Holodomor.

“I thanked the Minister for Ontario’s continued efforts to raise awareness about the Holodomor—the genocide committed by the Soviet regime against the Ukrainian people. Education is key to ensuring that this tragedy is remembered and understood by future generations. I am especially pleased that beginning this September, Grade 10 students across Ontario will study the Holodomor,” said the Consul General.

Oleh Nikolenko also thanked Valeriy Kostyuk, Executive Director of the Canada-Ukraine Foundation, who joined the meeting, for his ‘outstanding work, including his assistance in conducting the National Information Tour on the Holodomor throughout Ontario.’
