My dear Beile,

I have received yesterday two letters from Jerry, and am sending these up this morning, one written in Kharkov, the second from Lugansk. These are long letters, and very informative.

I further enclose his old bread card for October, as well as a cutting from the Manchester Guardian. The latter apparently reflects his feelings about the Soviet [Union], that he is tired of the country, the picture depicting certain feelings are underlined.

From the letters, Jerry should have been transferred to Nijni-Novgorod long ago, and as he has not cabled from Nijni, I am afraid he is still in this miserable Stanitza. Or is it perhaps that he did not cable, owing to the fact that he is getting a transfer North, and will write in due course? … Or is it because the case in “Uchastok No II” [Site No. 2] that has been keeping him there? …..

It is hard to speculate….

I do not like him not sending a cable, however, and this Stanitza is a miserable place, full of Sabotage cases. 

I suppose you have all followed the “Metro-Vicker Moscow Sabotage case” breathlessly. So have I. I am, however, pleased to see the verdict and the way it [ran] off. I am much more pleased to see the attitude that Britain took up, and the ensuing “Embargo” on Soviet trade. This will sober our friend Stalin a little, and show him further that this case has been, and has proved to be, the biggest political blunder of late. Whilst making due allowance for the attitude of the overwhelming Conservative Government at present riding the big horse in England, and while attributing a great deal to sensationalism, it has given them an excuse of riding the big horse as regards the Soviets and teach them a lesson to treat foreigners with more respect. They, the Consevatives, are apparently utilising this case, which after all has proved a colossal fiasco, a washout of the first magnitude, as a peg to hang their pinpricks on in their relations with Soviet Russia. Their embargo, I do not take [seriously], for it will hurt Britain as much as it will Russia to some extent. The mere fact that it is not a 100% embargo shows it. Undoubtedly Russia will be hurt more, for with Hitler in Germany exterminating Communism, Mussolini following very close in persecution of Communism, France no friends of the Soviets, and America not recognizing them, their only so-called friend, where their trade (export trade) consists of close to half of their totals is now very much threatened, and the Soviet cannot so lightly flout them.

I am however pleased of the British attitude, and must believe the Manchester Guardian, a very moderate and liberal paper, as quite distinct from all other aggressive – conservative press in the description of the trial, that same proved “THAT SOVIET JUSTICE IS BASED ON FRAUD AND TORTURE OF HUMAN BEINGS.”

The methods of interrogation are damning, though as to why McDonald and Thorton should have made such damn fools of themselves is still difficult to understand and for which due allowance must be made. I suppose in due course, some more light will be thrown on the subject, and a much better perspective gained thereon.

Anyhow, apparently Britain is going to full out for the Soviets, and make full capital out of this, and will probably obtain a better footing for their Specialists working and remaining in the Soviets, and to compensate them, Stalin will have to treat them better in the future, after this hush trial that just came to a close.

Stalin in having to make up and make good the last episode will have to shower some more distinguished treatments to foreigners, and I take it, that Jerry will benefit accordingly.

Of course like the trial of a few years ago in the Donetz Basin, this was mainly intended for HOME CONSUMPTION, and as such has served its purpose. 

I notice that Madam Litvinov is giving a dance for foreigners, the first sign for making up lost and [waning] friendships amongst foreigners.

Anyhow, I am still unmoved in my conclusion that Soviet Russia is no safe place for Jerry and that he must get out and the sooner the better. He has had quite enough of this adventure, and Comrade Stalin can have all his likely experience of the past and the present, as well as any in the future, rolled up in his “traditional pipe” and smoke same at leisure, contemplating as to the effect of his latest farce in further antagonising his Capitalist enemies, and their public opinion, which though very much despised by him, he can hardly afford to do without, and least of all quarrel with.

I have further received a letter from Leivi, but shall return out on another occasion, since the mail is closing within an hour.

Я отримав вчора два листи від Джеррі, і сьогодні вранці надсилаю їх, один написаний у Харкові, другий з Луганська. Це довгі листи і дуже інформативні.

Я також додаю його стару хлібну картку на жовтень, а також вирізку з Manchester Guardian. Останнє, мабуть, відображає його почуття до Радянського [Союзу], що він втомився від країни, підкреслено картинку, яка відображує певні почуття.

Судячи з листів, Джеррі вже давно мало бути переведено до Нижнього Новгорода, а оскільки він не телеграфував із Нижнього, боюся, він досі в цій жалюгідній Станиці. А може, він не телеграфував через те, що зайнятий переведенням на Північ, і з часом напише? … Чи через те, що справа «Участка № 2» його там тримає? …..

Важко вгадати....

Мені не подобається, що він не посилає телеграму, а ця Станиця — жалюгідне місце, повне саботажників.

Я припускаю, що ви всі затамувавши подих стежите за «справою московського саботажу Метро-Вікер». Я теж. Мені, однак, приємно бачити вирок і те, як він [втік]. Ще більш приємно бачити позицію, яку зайняла Британія, і подальше «ембарго» на радянську торгівлю. Це трохи протверезить нашого друга Сталіна і покаже йому, що ця справа була і виявилася найбільшою політичною помилкою за останній час. Приймаючи належним чином до уваги ставлення переважаючого консервативного уряду, що в даний час на коні в Англії, і приписуючи багато впливу сенсаційності, це дає їм привід бути на коні щодо Рад і задати їм урок ставитися до іноземців з більшою повагою. Вони, консерватори, мабуть, використовують цю справу, яка, зрештою, виявилася колосальним фіаско, зливом першої величини, кілком, на який можна повісити свої шпильки у стосунках із Радянською Росією. Їхнє ембарго, я не сприймаю [серйозно], бо це зашкодить Британії так само, як і Росії. Про це свідчить сам факт, що це не 100% ембарго. Безсумнівно, Росія постраждає більше, оскільки Гітлер у Німеччині знищує комунізм, Муссоліні дуже близький до переслідувань комунізму, Франція не друг Рад, а Америка не визнає їх, їхнім єдиним так званим другом, де їхня торгівля (експортна торгівля) складає майже половину їх загальної суми зараз знаходиться під дуже сильною загрозою, і Совєти не можуть так легко ними знехтувати.

Проте я задоволений ставленням Великої Британії, і я повинен вірити, що Manchester Guardian, дуже поміркована і ліберальна газета, яка в описі судового процесу цілком відрізняється від усієї іншої агресивно-консервативної преси, довела, «ЩО РАДЯНСЬКЕ ПРАВОСУДДЯ БАЗУЄТЬСЯ НА ОБМАНІ ТА КАТУВАННІ ЛЮДЕЙ».

Методи допиту є огидними, але чому Макдональд і Тортон повинні були зробити з себе таких проклятих дурнів, досі важко зрозуміти, і на це слід звернути належну увагу. Я припускаю, що згодом на цю тему буде пролито більше світла, і з’явиться набагато краща перспектива.

У будь-якому випадку, очевидно, Британія збирається зробити все для Рад і заробити на цьому по-максимум, і, ймовірно, отримає кращу базу для своїх спеціалістів, які працюють і залишаються в Радах, і щоб компенсувати їм, Сталін повинен буде ставитися до них краще у майбутньому, після цього тихого судового процесу, який щойно завершився.

У зв’язку з тим, що Сталін повинен виправити останній епізод, він повинен буде показати іноземцям ще кілька видатних прийомів, і я вважаю, що Джеррі виграє відповідно.

Звичайно, як і судовий процес кілька років тому в Донецькому басейні, це було в основному призначене для ДОМАШНЬОГО СПОЖИВАННЯ, і як таке виконало свою мету.

Я помічаю, що пані Литвинов дає танець для іноземців, перший знак налагодження втраченої і [згаслої] дружби між іноземцями.

Так чи інакше, я все ще непохитний у своєму висновку, що Радянська Росія не є безпечним місцем для Джеррі і що він повинен виїхати, і чим раніше, тим краще. Йому вже досить цієї пригоди, і товариш Сталін може весь свій ймовірний досвід минулого і сьогодення, а також будь-який у майбутньому, згорнути в свою «традиційну люльку» і на дозвіллі покурити, розмірковуючи над тим, щоб ефект його останнього фарсу в подальшому протистоянні своїм ворогам-капіталістам і їхній суспільній думці, яку він дуже зневажає, але не може дозволити собі обійтися без чи навіть сваритися з.

Далі я отримав листа від Лейві, але повернусь до цього іншим разом, оскільки пошта закривається протягом години.
