The Holodomor Museum team visited the Holodomor Memorial in Washington

During a three-week trip to the USA as part of the project Memorializing History Through Education and Museums program, our museum staff visited the Memorial to the victims of the Holodomor-genocide of 1932-1933 in the city of Washington.

The memorial was opened on November 7, 2015, and it looks like a massive bronze field of ears of grain. It was designed by the sculptor Larysa Kurilas.

Our colleagues managed not only to visit the memorial but also to meet Ms Larysa. Museum employees discussed with the sculptor the possible transfer of the model of the monument to the Museum Foundations, as well as plans for the development of the memorial as a place of remembrance and spreading of the history of the Holodomor in the United States.

The sculptor also shared a little secret of the memorial with our team – among the many ears of grain, the author hid three small images of mice. While visiting the memorial you can try to find them all.
