The UN International Court of Justice in The Hague has started hearing Ukraine’s lawsuit against Russia regarding genocide

On September 18, hearings in the case of Ukraine against Russia resumed at the UN International Court of Justice in The Hague. They will last until September 27. Ukraine is suing because of Russia’s misinterpretation of the Convention on the Prevention of Genocide. It is about the fact that the Russian Federation justified the attack on Ukraine by “protection” from the genocide in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

Ukraine filed this lawsuit on February 26, 2022. Later, another 32 countries joined this complaint.

It is noted that the court will hear the parties’ arguments within two weeks. Ukraine is represented by a delegation headed by Anton Korynevych, Ambassador-at-Large of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Russia – by a person with a similar position, Gennady Kuzmin. The Russian Federation will perform on September 18 and 25, Ukraine on September 19 and 27.

Official Kyiv submitted a statement to the International Court of Justice of the United Nations on February 26, 2022 – two days after the start of the full-scale military invasion of the Russian Federation.

In its lawsuit, the Ukrainian side, firstly, categorically states that there was no genocide on its territory, due to which Russia invaded Ukraine.

Secondly, Kyiv asks the court to “establish that Russia has no legal grounds to take measures on the territory of Ukraine and against it in order to prevent and punish the alleged genocide.”

Thirdly, the Ukrainian side accuses the Russian Federation of “planning acts of genocide in Ukraine” and claims that Russia “deliberately kills representatives of the Ukrainian nationality and inflicts serious injuries on them.”
