Happy Unity Day of Ukraine!
On 22 January, we remember two significant dates in Ukrainian history at once – the declaration of independence of the Ukrainian People’s Republic in 1918 and the proclamation of the Act of Unification of Ukrainian Lands, which occurred on the same day but a year later. The unification of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the People’s Republic of Ukraine into a united state marked the desire of Ukrainians, separated by the borders of empires, to unite and create their independent cathedral state. This event completely disproves the claims of Russian propaganda that Ukrainian lands were first united by Stalin in 1939.
“The Western Ukrainian People’s Republic (Halychyna, Bukovyna, Hungarian Rus) and the Dnieper Greater Ukraine, which have been torn apart from each other for centuries are merging together for centuries. The eternal dreams of the best sons of Ukraine lived and died. There is only one independent Ukrainian People’s Republic,” declared the Universal Directory of the Ukrainian National People’s Republic about the Act of Reunification on 22 January 1919.
Today, Ukraine continues its struggle for independence and unity. They are the goal of our Victory and the guarantee of the nation’s existence.
At the same time, history teaches us: that to defeat the enemy, we must unite. Let’s unite, friends! Our unity is our weapon!
