Mykhailo Kostiv participated in the workshop “War, Science and Emotions: (Un)spoken”
On February 21-22, an international workshop, “WAR, SCIENCE AND EMOTIONS: (UN)SPOKEN,” was held in Chernihiv, organised by the Department of Culture and Tourism of the Chernihiv City Council and the Chernihiv Research Center for the Anthropology of War with the assistance of the NGO “Center for Applied Anthropology” and the Ukrainian Association of Oral History. Forty-five speakers from Ukraine, Lithuania, Germany, Canada, Switzerland, Poland and France joined the scientific event.
Mykhailo Kostiv, an employee of our museum, talked about the role of oral history interviews in the process of recognising the Holodomor as genocide in Ukraine and the world. In particular, he characterised two collections of oral history materials about the Holodomor, presented in North America at the turn of the 1940s and 1950s and the end of the 1980s.
Summarising his speech, the researcher noted that oral history evidence has a significant impact on the process of recognising the Holodomor as an act of genocide. They are a crucial source for scholarly research and can also be useful in popularising the Holodomor topic among different audiences. Finally, Mykhailo Kostiv emphasised the importance of further identification and study of oral history collections related to the events of 1932-1933.
