Come and join us for the Slovo House Game!

What secrets did the walls of Ukraine’s most famous literary house hide? You will learn on 15 August during an interactive game dedicated to the history of the Slovo House.

At the turn of the 1920s and 1930s, this house became a home to dozens of Ukrainian writers, poets, theatre directors and other cultural figures. Mykola Khvyliovyi, Mike Johansen, Pavlo Tychyna, Volodymyr Sosiura, Ostap Vyshnia, Oles Kurbas, Nataliia Uzhvii, Ivan Bahrianyi and many other members of the Ukrainian intelligentsia worked there. For some, this place became a symbol of creative triumph, whilst for others it marked the beginning of a tragic fate.

While playing, you will explore the flats of the building’s residents, discover historical photographs, autographs and other materials, and uncover little-known aspects of the artists’ lives. Step by step, 1930s Kharkiv will unfold before you, a city where inspiration coexisted with censorship, repression and the constant threat of persecution.

This is an opportunity to learn about the legendary Slovo House and its residents, and to better understand the circumstances that allowed Ukrainian culture to flourish and the significance of freedom of speech.

The game was created by the Kharkiv Literary Museum. The creators are Maryna Kutsenko and Olha Cheremska.

Date and Time: Sunday 15 August at 4.00 pm.                   

Venue: Holodomor Museum, 15-A Ivana Mazepy Street.

Participation in the game is free; you will only need to pay the museum entrance fee (20–30 UAH).
