We invite you to the public dialogue “Recognition of genocides in the world: domestic and foreign experience”

22 April 2024

On April 27, the Holodomor Museum will hold a Public Dialogue, “Recognition of Genocides in the World: Domestic and Foreign Experience”, during which experts will analyse the domestic and foreign experience of recognising crimes as genocide.

Russia is waging a genocidal and aggressive war against Ukraine. A component of the grave international crime of genocide, as a rule, is its concealment by criminals. About ten states have already officially qualified the actions of the Russian Federation in Ukraine as genocide. International law obliges the states of the world to cooperate to prevent and stop genocide, as well as crimes against humanity and war crimes. Recognising the actions of a criminal as genocide is a complex legal task. It also requires the political will of international figures.

In this context, it is crucial to analyse the processes of recognition of crimes committed in the 20th century as genocide. Ukraine and numerous other countries have such experience. During the dialogue, scholars will consider examples of the international recognition of the Holodomor as genocide and Russia’s current war against Ukraine, the reference case of recognising the Shoah (Holocaust) as genocide, and the experience and problems of recognising the Armenian tragedy of 1915–1917 as genocide.

Speakers:

• Andrii Ivanets, candidate of historical sciences, lead researcher of the National Museum of the Holodomor-Genocide, publicist, and public figure;

• Vitaly Chernoivanenko, president of the Ukrainian Association for Jewish Studies, senior researcher of the Department of Judaism of V.I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine;

• Oleksandr Bozhko, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine, Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Armenia (1996-2001, 2005-2010), translator, Armenian scholar.

The event will be moderated by Andrii Ivanets.

The public dialogue will be held on April 27, 2024, Saturday, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Hall of Memory of the National Museum of the Holodomor-Genocide at the address: Kyiv, 3 Lavrska, str.
