Welsh politician Mick Antoniv: A statue of Gareth Jones is to be erected in Kyiv

19 May 2026

On Tuesday, 19 May, the Holodomor Museum was visited by Mick (Mykhailo) Antoniw, a Welsh politician, lawyer and former member of the Senedd, the Welsh Parliament, and Chris Kitchen, General Secretary of the National Union of Mineworkers in the UK. They arrived in Kyiv as volunteers and visited our museum as part of their humanitarian mission. The guests paid tribute to the Holodomor victims by lighting candles at the Altar of Memory, had a guided tour and conversed with our museum staff.

Mick Antoniv, who has Ukrainian roots, is one of the initiators of the installation in Kyiv, on Gareth Jones Street, of a monument to the Welsh journalist who was the first to tell the Western world about the mass famine in Ukraine. Work on this monument is currently underway in Wales, and the plan is to transport it to Ukraine this summer. The official unveiling is scheduled for November this year.

The Holodomor Museum welcomes this initiative and thanks everyone involved in bringing it to life! We will follow every stage of the project’s implementation and keep you informed!
