April 24 – Day of Remembrance of the Armenian Genocide Victims

On April 24, the victims of the Armenian genocide in the Ottoman Empire are commemorated. The memorial date is established for April 24 because it was on this day in 1915 that the arrests and deportations of Armenian intellectuals and politicians began in Istanbul, followed by their destruction.

Estimates of the number of victims of the Armenian tragedy vary. One of the most common is the figure of about 1.5 million victims of genocide in the years 1915–1923.

More than 30 countries of the world recognised the mass extermination of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire as an act of genocide.

For the 100th anniversary of the genocide in Armenia, a logo was developed, in the central part of which there is a purple forget-me-not flower, designed to remind of the crime and preserve memory. Its five petals symbolise the continents where Armenians moved to build the future.

The Ukrainian Armenian community annually commemorates the genocide victims in various cities of our country. Ukrainians, as a nation that experienced the Holodomor genocide in their history, sympathise with the Armenian people, many of whose representatives live in Ukraine and consider it their second homeland.
