Candle of Remembrance on Wikipedia: Tell More about the Holodomor Genocide
From November 23 to November 30, we invite you to join a virtual candle light campaign to commemorate the Holodomor Genocide on Wikipedia, the largest online encyclopedia in the world. The page of the project “The Candle of Remembrance for the Victims of the 1932-1933 Holodomor” provides a list of articles that can be started or improved. They are related to the history of the Holodomor Genocide.
It is important to create good articles on Ukrainian Wikipedia and other language sections so that they contain information about this part of Ukrainian history. For example, there are still no articles on Documents that reveal the mechanism of the Holodomor-Genocide and the Resistance to the Holodomor lists of pages.
Check out the Wikipedia article about your home village, town or city – is there any mention of the Holodomor? Are there any data on the number of victims, cultural heritage monuments related to those events, other data?
You can also upload photos from Commemoration events and add cultural heritage monuments related to Holodomor memorials to Wikipedia Commons, illustrate the articles and create them (provided there are enough sources).
The Ukrainian Wikipedia has a category of articles called “Holodomor“. You can improve articles in this category, or go deeper and see what topics are already covered or what sources the authors have used. For example, the article “Holodomor” contains many sources and has many links that allow to cover the topic as a whole.
We need to inform the world about this difficult page of Ukrainian history. We must tell who researched it, what the laws and regimes of the regime could have caused millions of deaths, what movies and books would tell the modern viewer / reader more. If we do it as fully as possible, there is a chance that we will retain evidence of the regime’s crimes, talk about its victims and the memory candle will not disappear.
If you have not written articles on Wikipedia before, you can check the Cheatsheet or Editing Wikipedia Brochure.
