The performance “SИN” at the Holodomor Museum again

8 November 2023

On November 19, 2023, at 4:00 p.m., the National Museum of the Holodomor-Genocide will host the performance “SИN” of the POGLЯD Theater Workshop for the fifth time. It is based on the story of one of the most prominent writers of the Ukrainian Shot Revival, Valerian Pidmohylny. It will be as part of the Holodomor Remembrance Day events.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

Not everyone knows that the Holodomor of 1932-1933 was not the first famine on Ukrainian lands. The first massive man-made famine organized by Bolshevik Russia occurred in the 20s of the last century, covering the southern provinces of the UkrSSR. Because of the crop failure in the Kuban and the Volga region caused by drought, most of the Ukrainian grain was seized and exported to Russia. Thus, during 1921-1923, millions of Ukrainians suffered from hunger. Any information about the famine in Ukraine was forbidden to be made public. The Ukrainian and Russian press was under party censorship.

ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE

One of the first writers who dared to write about the famine of 1921-1923 was Valerian Pidmogilny. His short story “Son” was published in 1923. In his work, the writer described how the terrible test of hunger affects the human mind, how instincts prevail over morality, and indifference over mercy.

SИN play is about the everyday life of Ukrainians during the mass man-made famine of 1921-1923 (100 years ago). The main character – Hrytsko Vasiurenko – SON – becomes a hostage not only of a cruel system but also of his principles and beliefs.

Will he be able to take care of his tortured mother? Will humanity survive in inhumane conditions?

The leitmotif of the performance is Ukrainian folk songs in a live choral performance by the honoured folk song and dance ensemble of Ukraine “DARNYCHANKA”. Centre of artistic and technical creativity “Pechersk”.

The directors of the play are Yehor Vodiakhin and Kristina Sheludko.

The price of tickets is UAH 250.
