The Holodomor Museum congratulates the leading researcher, Doctor of Historical Sciences Natalia Romanets, on the publication of the book “Mechanisms of Creation of the Holodomor: Grain Procurement Campaigns of 1931-1933 in the Dnipropetrovsk region: a collection of documents and materials”. The publication is the result of the long-term work of the compiler of the publication in archives and museum funds.

The collection includes documents and materials of the regional and district press from the funds of the State Archives of the Dnipropetrovsk Region, the Dnipropetrovsk National Historical Museum named after D. I. Yavornytskyi, the National Library of Ukraine named after V. I. Vernadskyi, which characterize the genocidal mechanisms of organizing the grain procurement campaigns of 1931–1933 in the Dnipropetrovsk region, which led to the total seizure of food from the farmers, and thus to the Holodomor of 1932–1933.

Most of the presented documents were kept under the label “Classified” and have been published for the first time after declassification. The publication contains an introductory article, an archeographic preface, comments on documents, and indexes.

“In general, a significant and versatile search and research work was carried out in Ukraine on the study of grain procurement in 1931-1933. Its main result is the inclusion of a large complex of new sources in the scientific circulation and their scientific interpretation in the context of establishing the causes of the Holodomor. However, despite the great achievements of domestic historiography, there have still been problems that require additional comprehensive research, among which are the regional features of the creation of the Holodomor. Therefore, the proposed research is aimed at filling this gap using the example of the Dnipropetrovsk region, which played a crucial role in the grain procurement campaigns of 1931–1933, as it was one of the key producers and suppliers of commercial bread not only in Ukraine but also in the USSR. In addition, the Dnipropetrovsk region was one of the largest administrative and territorial units of Ukraine at that time,” notes editor Natalia Romanets in the introductory article.

The collection has been scientifically reviewed by the Institute of History of Ukraine of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. It is intended for scientists, teachers, students and everyone interested in the history of Ukraine in the 20th century.
