Moldova Commemorates the Holodomor Victims

On November 5, at the ULIM International Independent University of Moldova, a round table on Holodomor in Ukraine in 1932–1933 and an organized famine in the Moldavian SSR (1946–1947) was held. It was dedicated to the memory of victims, the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Moldova reports.

In discussing the causes, scope and consequences of the Holodomor in Ukraine and the famine in Moldova of 1946–1947, the following people took part: Interim Charge d’Affaires of Ukraine in Moldova Volodymyr Boiechko; ULIM Vice-Rector for International Relations Valentyna Chumachenko; member of the NGO “Community of Ukrainian Women of Moldova” Veronica Arpintin; Doctor of History, Conference Specialist at the Institute of History of Moldova Anatol Tseranu; scientists of Mechnykov Odessa State University – Doctor of History, Professor of the Department of Archeology and Ethnology of Ukraine, Dean of the Faculty of History and Philosophy Viacheslav Kushnir and Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Archeology and Ethnology of Ukraine, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of History and Philosophy, Nataliia Petrova; Doctor of History, Conference Specialist, Head of the Department of International Relations, Political Science and Journalism of ULIM Mihai Chernenko, Doctor of Political Science of the Faculty of International Relations, Political Science and Journalism of  ULIM Valerii Mizha.

The participants of the conference emphasized the importance of informing the society about true history, noted the progress of Ukraine in memorializing and international recognition of the Holodomor as genocide of the Ukrainian people, emphasized the need for effective control of the public over the the authorities in order to prevent the repetition of crimes of totalitarianism.

After the roundtable, at the Odeon cinema, a screening of the film “The Harvests of Sorrow” was shown. It made a strong impression onto the audience, especially onto the student youth.

The events were organized by the Embassy of Ukraine in cooperation with ULIM, the NGO “Community of Ukrainian Women of Moldova” and the Association of Ukrainian Youth of Moldova “Zlahoda”.
