The municipality of the Brazilian city Maringa with the assistance of numerous Ukrainian community recognized the Holodomor in Ukraine in 1932-33 as a genocide. The decision was passed on January 23, 2019, and was reported in Twitter by the wife of the Ambassador of Ukraine to Brazil, Fabiana Tronenko, who is actively taking care of the cultural representation of Ukraine.

“This recognition, without any doubt, has a unique meaning for us, because it testifies the respect, support and friendship with the people of Ukraine. It allows us to return once more to the pages of our history, which we must talk about, because in 1932-33 the most brutal crimes were committed against Ukrainians. If the Holodomor were not suppressed, then it would be probably possible to avoid the Holocaust. We can not allow silence, oblivion of these crimes, so that they will not be repeated in the future “- said the Ambassador’s wife.

We remind that Brazil annually actively participates in commemorative measures to commemorate the victims of the Holodomor and establishes the status of the Holodomor-genocide on a legal level. It has been recognized by the municipalities of the cities of Rio de Janeiro, Curitiba, Prudentopolis (the last two are the parts of the Paran State, which also recognized the Holodomor at a state level in a separate decision).
