COPY OF A LETTER FROM JERRY, dated 6/3/33 received at Tzaneen 6/4/33

Stanitza Luganskaia 6/3/33

My dear Israel,

I humbly apologise for my long silence. I have kept quiet for a week or two, --- the longest interval that has ever elapsed between any two of my letters to you.

I was in a mood of great uncertainty, of much work, mostly night work and could not gather together to write, though to write to you was plenty. It was perhaps idleness and futility of doing anything useful.

From the practice of my work for the last month here on the bridge, I became unaccustomed to sit, think or do any mental work. The nature of the work allocated to me is such that in the course of 14-16 hours a day I do not write one single letter. The reason is that there is no time left for writing or thinking till the Spring Floods which we expect here on the 15/3/33, i.e. in ten days’ time. Everything will be flooded, the works the power house, the compressing plant, the stores, barracks, the temporary wooden bridge, the concrete producing plant etc. If we fail, we all go to Jail, if not, we survive and possibly rest for a while. ----

So now I spend my time on the work in cold blizzards, frost storms, as well as under fair conditions within the space of a hectare or 2 of ground. Just driving the Russians on and on to the limit of exhaustion!!! ….

With the new powers given us by the latest Government decrees, I can do very much.

The main thing, I can refuse the labourer his “SHITOI” (?) [zheton – token for bread] or take from him his bread card. That to him is everything, for bread you can get here at no price at all!.....

People work here for bread only, the 800 gr. – 600 – 400 grms of bread daily, for no other food is obtainable from the stores. – There are none.

Further, I i.e. the administration, can put a man to jail, i.e. we make the man work as before, and at night time sleep in a cold unheated room under lock and key.

Further aman absenting himself for one day without a Doctor’s certificate, gets thrown out as a “PROGULSCHIK” [shirker] and that fact gets written on his “Passport” and not easy, for not easy will it be for that man to get work! If he comes late 15 minutes, I give him half his bread ration and that is, Israel, very sore!----

Such, by the way, is discipline in Russia!

Well, with such powers one can do a lot, you will admit, and I think that with such discipline for a few years, the Russian laziness and idiotic disinterestedness will considerably be diminished.

Well, a little king with such powers, I race about on the job. To say that I can carry out the plan, would be untrue. The plan is stiff and its 100% completion is no easy task.

In the throes of such work, in an atmosphere of uncertainty as to my future, I could hardly write. I know that the chief engineer of Mostrotrest would be here soon. I waited, he came and has gone and I am with a clearer head.

I complained about these conditions on the property, on a few local enemies of communists I made (by the way, the Chief is a party man, too) and enquired whether the Trest [Mostotrest] will want me in a few weeks’ time, when my Visa is up. I think I told you that on account of the changed policy the tempo of the Second Five Years Plan is so reduced as to throw men out of employment and cause the creation of labour employment Exchanges. (By the way, because of the present sudden appearance of labour and greater scarcity of work, labourers and even greater and higher qualifications are not so difficult to get.)

Well. I learnt, that I should not fear, that they will again try and extend my Visa, and that on the completion of this work they will give me a post on Bridge work either on Volga river at the town of Nijni-Novgorod (“Gorki” town) 13 hours by train from Moscow – a huge bridge, obviously, since Volga is larger and wider than say, “Severnoi Donetz”, at the Stanitza or at Kashira on the “Oka” river, or “Yaroslav” (?) bridge, both of which are a mere 80-100 klm from Moscow.

That sounds better indeed, better that in the dead Novosvetlovka, which to-day dies of hunger --- Here at least we have a Railway branch and can bring something, but at the “Lisia Balka” one can bring food and material by motor transport or horses. The former cannot go through 2 feet of snow and the latter have mostly died out by now.

If you think that I am exaggerating, I will tell you that their 110 men came on foot to us and started work. – If one cannot bring bread to Lisia Balka, one thinks nothing here of throwing over people in the space of a day to another place, where, if they can only get bread and sour cucumbers soup, accommodation is of minor consequence. I can see Leivi smile at what I said! Far fetched! I do not care if you do not believe me! I see it and think nothing great of it! I see often people sleep in dozens in our offices on the floors, tables. I also did it a few times – in our power station on greasy floors.

It is wonderful how I am getting off the point! It is a sign that I really want to tell you so much that I do not know in what order to do it! I am just [flitting] about in eagerness to write.

I think Russia is very interesting to-day. It has changed its policy and has entered with typical tempo of Bolshevism on a new path. It is developing an iron discipline; it deals with the worker, labourer, harder than does the S. African Government. It is throwing millions back to its lands, and who can tell, perhaps things will improve?

In any case, it is Winter now and I think it wise to wait another month. Get nearer to Moscow and leave from Leningrad when it gets warmer.

Shall write again later.

This paper you sent me and it came in handy. But I am afraid that you are trespassing Soviet Customs Law by doing so. For fear of consequences, I think it wise to stop.

Am sending a copy of this to Leivi.

I acknowledge all your letters and all the copies and originals, or the enclosed newspaper cuttings from South Africa.

To-day I read of the Reichstag fire in the Soviet Press and await impatiently your press for details. Here are none, only what every communist paper said in Germany, France and England. But I want something else.

In other words, I want more, I want more freedom.

All your moneys (i.e. Beile’s £1.10.0. and £2.0.0. and Leivi’s 10 dollars) have arrived in Lugansk,. I cannot get there at the moment, but hope to get down there soon.

My health is good; my toes have healed and I am a proud possessor of a Government “Polushubok” (a sheepskin coat, Beile?) and a pair of “Sapogi” (Long boots, Beile?)!!!!.....

I am getting on in this world!...

LOVE Jerry.

Send no money, I repeat once more.
