My dear Leivi,

I have written to you very little lately directly, for indirectly, in the forms of copies of letters exchanged between very, myself and the rest of the family, of which you have received a copy of each and all, you know as much as anyone else does.

This week there was a long letter from Jerry, over three and half foolscap close typewritten matter, and I can assure you to write all this by hand is a great effort for him, and must be appreciated.

Of course, I do not want to reply to anything in the nature of the Political, as you will readily understand. It is not worth to run the risk of the Censor and our friends, the OGPU. One can never tell as to want our latter friends may not do, all of a sudden.

You will agree that it is difficult to censor outgoing mail, it is, however, an easy matter to tamper with incoming mail, and it is highly desirable that nothing [incrimminating] appears in these in the political sense. I need hardly stress the risk run in doing so.

I feel much easier this week. Jerry has completely realised his position, and is judging Bolshevism or rather STALINISM for what it is worth. There is no further necessity to touch upon his leaving the Country. This he has decided and made his mind up already.

I shall quote a few obvious passages in his letter:

“I HAVE EXPERIENCED A CERTAIN DISSOLUTION MENT [DISILLUSIONMENT] IN THE IDEOLOGY OF THE CREED HERE, HAVING COME TO IT, FACE TO FACE!!..”

“I am afraid I shall have to go home. And now I feel that even work outside my profession but in a “freer” atmosphere could be acceptable.”

The latter passage is MOST SIGNIFICANT.

Again:

“DO NOT ASK ME WHY I DO NOT LEAVE AT ONCE. I CANNOT ANSWER YOU THAT”.

Now the last passage is very vital. It is obvious that for reasons, which cannot be OTHERWISE THAN THE CENSOR, he cannot divulge his plans in a letter.

Maybe, he will throw some light on the matter in a future letter. Possible just hint a little. Previously he hinted about getting a free passage to London, and also that he was going to have a row with his boss Platinov, whom now he styles both SELFISH AND MEAN after what he thought the world of him up to now, is also interesting. A little while ago, he wrote that he was made a fool of at Novoswetlovka in the presence of the Engineers. After that he stated that having found the position in Novosvetlovka intolerable, and getting his transfer to the Stanitza, he was going to have a scene with Platinov, and thus secure a free passage to London. Apparently this scene would not work, for this wonderful Platinov is but a bird of the “same flock”, selfish and mean. As in all probability leaving Russia at the moment would lay him open to the vindictiveness of this SELFISH AND MEAN PLATINOV, he must secure both an extension of his Visa and a transfer away from where he is, to escape a SABOTAGE implication trumped up by his Superior Platinov, and the big Gun. His extension was therefore both advisable as well as essential, and so was his transfer both advisable as well as essential, and so was his transfer. Nijni-Novgorod is far away in the North from Lugansk, and is, on the main line to Moscow-Lenningrad and much nearer, shaking the dust of his feet of Russian Soil and its perfidious atmosphere….

I therefore read that Jerry’s delay in getting out from Russia was essential under the circumstances. He will certainly lose no time to get out as soon as he can, and we must wait a little. With the present closing down of works, they must find [him] superfluous and will undoubtedly soon give him a ticket to London. This is what Jerry is maneuvering for. To be safe in Russia one must move………………………………………………………………….. . The more you move about from one job to another the safer you are. The longer you stay the more danger you run in getting implicated in something or other. The latter Sabotage charges need not actually take place, it can easily be trumped up, and is part and parcel of a POLICY.

Everybody is Sabotaging, nobody (excluding the DAMN FOOLS) are doing their best in the practical sense, for no one can do his best, and was he even to do his best, it is thought nothing [of], because it is his duty to do his best, and whenever he cannot or will not do his best, he is obviously SABOTAGING.

It would be easiest of all to frame a charge against Stalin for Sabotage, for he is the responsible head of affairs, and if anything goes wrong, it is the HEAD rather that has not done his duty, and who is guilty of sabotage.

It is the biggest Joke of the Century, the Sabotage SCAPEGOATISM. It would be a joke indeed, had it not been so serious…

However, it is a ROTTEN STATE OF AFFAIRS, a BLOODY ROTTEN ONE INDEED. This in itself will and must CONDEMN Bolshevism, for all and sundry that it might have pretended, let alone achieved…….

However impatient one gets with Jerry’s leaving Russia, it is unavoidable to have a little more patience.  The biggest difficulty was to get him make up his mind, once and for all to get out. This has been the hardest battle, and this has been won.

Once he has made up his own mind to leave, the rest is but a matter of patience.

It may be sooner that one anticipates. It may take longer that one would like to, but it is coming.

As he states, and which I have quoted already:

“I NOW FEEL THAT EVEN WORK OUTSIDE MY PROFESSION BUT IN A “FREER” ATMOSPHERE COULD BE ACCEPTABLE.”

Мій дорогий Лейві,

Останнім часом я писав вам дуже мало прямо, бо опосередковано, у вигляді копій листів, якими обмінювався я сам із рештою сім’ї, з яких ви отримали копію кожного, як і всі, ви знаєте не менше за всіх решту. 

Цього тижня від Джеррі надійшов довгий лист, три з половиною машинописні кальки тексту, і я можу запевнити вас, що написати все це від руки — це для нього величезне зусилля, і це потрібно цінувати.

Звісно, я не хочу відповідати на щось політичного характеру, як ви зрозумієте. Ризикувати з Цензором і нашими друзями, ОГПУ, не варто. Ніколи не можна сказати, як не хочуть наші друзі, що їм стукне у голову.

Ви погодьтеся, що важко піддати цензурі вихідну пошту, проте легко підробити вхідну пошту, і дуже бажано, щоб у них не з’являлося нічого [звинувачувального] в політичному сенсі. Мені навряд чи потрібно наголошувати на ризику при цьому.

На цьому тижні мені набагато легше. Джеррі цілком усвідомив свою позицію і судить більшовизм чи, точніше, СТАЛІНІЗМ за те, чого він вартий. Більше немає необхідності зачіпати його виїзд з країни. Це він уже вирішив і прийняв рішення.

Я процитую кілька очевидних пасажів з його листа:

«Я ПЕРЕЖИВ ПЕВНЕ РОЗЧАРУВАННЯ ТУТ В ІДЕОЛОГІЧНИХ ПЕРЕКОНАННЯХ ТУТ, ПРИЙШОВШИ ДО ЦЬОГО ОБЛИЧЧЯМ ДО ОБЛИЧЧЯ!!..»

«Я боюся, що мені доведеться їхати додому. І тепер я відчуваю, що навіть робота не за фахом, але в «вільнішій» атмосфері може бути прийнятною».

Останній уривок НАЙБІЛЬШ ЗНАЧИМИЙ.

Знову:

«НЕ ПИТАЙТЕ МЕНЕ, ЧОМУ Я НЕ ВІДРАЗУ ЇДУ. Я НЕ МОЖУ ВАМ НА ЦЕ ВІДПОВІСТИ».

Тепер останній уривок дуже важливий. Очевидно, що з причин, які не інакші, як ЦЕНЗУРА, він не може оприлюднити свої плани в листі.

Можливо, в майбутньому листі він проллє світло на це питання. Можливо, просто трохи натякне. Раніше він натякав на безкоштовний проїзд до Лондона, а також на те, що збирається посваритися зі своїм босом Платіновим, якого тепер він називає ЕГОЇСТИЧНИМ і ЗЛИМ, після того, як вважав його світилом - це цікаво. Трохи раніше він писав, що в Новосвітлівці з нього робили дурня в присутності інженерів. Після цього він заявив, що, вважає своє місце роботи в Новосвітлівці нестерпним і отримавши переведення до Станиці, збирається влаштувати сцену з Платіновим і таким чином забезпечити собі вільний переїзд до Лондона. Мабуть, ця сцена не спрацювала, бо цей чудовий Платінов — син свого народу, егоїстичний і підлий. Оскільки, найімовірніше, покинувши Росію в даний момент, він буде відкритим для мстивості цього ЕГОЇСТИЧНОГО ТА ЗЛОГО ПЛАТІНОВА, він повинен забезпечити як продовження своєї візи, так і переведення з місця, де він знаходиться, щоб уникнути наслідку САБОТАЖУ, придуманого його Начальником і великою шишкою Платіновим. Тому подовження було як доцільним, так і необхідним, і його переведення було як доцільним, так і необхідним, як і його переведення. Нижній Новгород знаходиться далеко на півночі від Луганська, на магістралі Москва-Ленінград і набагато ближче, і струшує пил з ніг російської землі та її віроломної атмосфери…

Тому я прочитав, що затримка Джеррі з виїздом з Росії була важливою за цих обставин. Він, безперечно, не втратить час, щоб виїхати, як тільки зможе, і ми повинні трохи почекати. З нинішнім закриттям заводів вони повинні вважати [його] зайвим і, безсумнівно, незабаром дадуть йому квиток до Лондона. Це те, для чого Джеррі маневрує. Щоб бути в безпеці в Росії, потрібно рухатися………………………………………………………………….. . Чим більше ви переходите з однієї роботи на іншу, тим безпечніше. Чим довше ви залишаєтеся, тим більше ризикуєте бути залученими в те чи інше. Останні звинувачення в саботажі насправді не обов’язково мають місце, їх можна легко сфабрикувати, і вони є невід’ємною частиною ПОЛІТИКИ.

Всі саботують, ніхто (крім ПРОКЛЯТИХ ДУРНІВ) не робить все якнайкраще в практичному сенсі, тому що ніхто не може зробити все, що в його силах, і якби він зробив все можливе, це нікому не потрібно, тому що це його обов'язок робити все можливе, і коли він не може або не хоче робити все можливе, він, очевидно, САБОТУЄ.

Найпростіше було б висунути Сталіну звинувачення в саботажі, бо він відповідальний керівник, і якщо щось піде не так, то скоріше КЕРІВНИК, який не виконав свій обов'язок, і винний у саботажі.

Це найбільша хвороба століття - переведення стрілок. Це був би жарт, якби не було так серйозно…

Проте це ГНИЛИЙ СТАН СПРАВ, ДІЙСНО ГНИЛИЙ. І ми маємо засудити більшовизм за все і всіх, чим він прикидався, а ще більше - зробив. 

Якими б нетерплячими ми не були щодо того, щоб Джеррі залишив Росію, неминуче потрібно набратися трохи більше терпіння. Найбільшою складністю було змусити його вирішити раз і назавжди виїхати. Це була найважча битва, і її виграно.

Після того, як він сам вирішив поїхати, решта всього лиш питання терпіння.

Це може бути раніше, ніж ми думаємо. Це може зайняти більше часу, ніж хотілося б, але це невідворотньо.

Як він стверджує, і що я вже цитував:

«ТЕПЕР Я ВІДЧУВАЮ, ЩО НАВІТЬ ПРАЦЮВАТИ ПОЗА МОЄЮ ПРОФЕСІЮ, АЛЕ В «ВІЛЬНІШІЙ» АТМОСФЕРІ МОЖЕ БУТИ ПРИЙНЯТНЕ».
